Hotmail was launched in 1996 and is the first web-based email service. Founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith, it was spelled HOTMaiL, emphasizing the "HTML" in the name. Microsoft acquired Hotmail in 1997. In August 2012, Microsoft improved Hotmail and renamed the service Outlook.com
When Hotmail launches for the first time, free accounts provide features such as spam filters and advanced virus scanning and storage up to 250 MB. When Microsoft purchased the email service, Hotmail users also provided a schedule and the ability to save contacts in the address book. Users can choose to pay subscription fees to upgrade their Hotmail account.
Today, the Outlook.com service offers virtually unlimited free storage, connected to Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Google and LinkedIn, mobile access, search integration, and spam filtering. You can also use Outlook to send and receive email to Outlook.com.
